New homeowners often ask us if it is safe to walk on their metal roof or if they can damage the metal roof by getting on top of it. Can you physically get on the roof? Of course you can. Should you? My answer is absolutely not. The danger of falling is not worth it. In this article, I am going to explain all the questions you have had about walking on a metal roof. If you are asking because you want to paint your metal roof, then read on.

Walking on a 6/12 pitch metal roof
Can You Damage The Metal Roof By Walking On It?
It’s possible, but unlikely. It depends on how much you personally weigh, what sort of decking/roof sheathing you have underneath and how thick the metal is. Most metal roofs are 26-guage steel on 1/2 decking. This sort of system can hold quite a bit of weight on it without damaging the panels. Do not walk on the ribs as those are the most prone to damage. If you feel any dirt on the roof, you should not be walking on top of it as your weight pushing down on debris can cause serious harm to the roof.
Where Do You Walk On A Metal Roof?
As mentioned, if your roof has 1/2 inch decking, you can walk pretty much anywhere. If your roofing system has thin boards on top of the rafters, you could just be asking for trouble. The safest place to walk on a metal roof is where the rafters are underneath. They are made to support more weight. Just move very slowly until you can identify where on the roof can support the extra weight.
What Is The Best Way To Walk On A Metal Roof?
I never recommend a homeowner walk on a metal roof. If you must, the best way to walk on a roof is to wait for a clear day where there is zero chance of rain (wet metal roofs are like ice). Stay on a slope of the roof that is a 6/12 pitch or less! Do not even think about walking on a steep metal roof as you can slide off very easily.
How Much Weight Is Too Much On A Metal Roof?
The weight of a metal roof varies depending on type of metal and the thickness of the metal. However, chances are, your metal roof can support your weight. The reason being, is that most roofs since the 1970s are designed with asphalt shingles in mind. These weigh roughly 3 pounds per square foot while most metal roofs are around 1 pound per square foot. As long as you are careful and not obese, your roof can normally handle your weight without any real problems.
Closing Thoughts
Risking your life to walk on a metal roof is not wise. Homeowners normally don’t carry the safety gear needed like roofing shoes or a fall protection harness. Almost all roofing companies will inspect your roof for free and they have much more experience than you do walking on these kinds of roofs. Therefore, you really have no reason to ever step foot on the roof. If you do decide to take a stroll on your roof, please be careful and never do it when it is wet.
