When you are in the market for a new roof, surely you are going to be calling multiple roofing contractors in your area to give you an estimate. There are many questions you should ask your contractor, and one of the most important ones is “How many nails will you put in each shingle?”
Your Location Matters
Weather is significantly different in various parts of the United States and the roofing materials along with best roofing installation practices differ throughout as well.
If you live in an area with high wind due to tornados and hurricanes, all shingle manufacturers and competent roofing companies will put six nails per shingle.
In areas that do not see as much extreme weather, four nails per shingle is the standard. For example, in North Alabama where we are based out of, we will install six nails on the starter row and then move to four nails after that. That first row sees the most wind so we want it to be the strongest.
Which Roofing Nail Are They Using?
We have an entire article on roofing nails that expands on the topic but the nail type is as important as the amount of nails per shingle. Make sure you consulate your roofing manufacture to make sure you are properly protected.
Why do the amount of roofing nails per shingle matter?
You are paying an absolute fortune for your new roof and you want to make sure you are getting the best roofing warranty possible. If the manufacturer suggests 5 nails per shingle and your roofing company only does 4, what do you think is going to happen when you need to file an insurance claim on your roof?
Me personally, I would not trust any roofing company and would read over the manufacture specifications myself to make sure I was getting exactly the correct amount of roofing nails per shingle.
