In our quest to answer some of the most basic roofing questions on our website, my partner sent me a screenshot of a question I had asked him when our company was only about a week old. You guessed it, “Hey Zach, How many actual shingles are in a bundle?”.

We do know that 99% of you who are visiting this page are specifically wanting to know about 3-tab shingles or architectural shingles. Keep in mind that other roofing product may not be measured in bundles, or if they do (wood shake for example), there will be varying amounts of shingles in that bundle.

In a bundle of shingles, there are 29 standard shingles ( 12in x 36in)

So using this number, we can accurately guess how many actual shingles are on a roof! Yes, a weird fact to know, but you can’t believe how often we are asked.

Let’s look at this example:

Mark lives in Oklahoma and recently had a 30 square roof put on his house. He read this article and knows there are roughly 29 shingles in a bundle and therefore approximately 87 shingles in a square (29 shingles x 3 bundles).

Mark then multiplies 87 x 30 squares and can tell you that there are 2,610 shingles on his house.

We hope you found this common question somewhat helpful and maybe even perhaps we helped you win a bet with your neighbor! Ha!

Be sure to let us know in the comments why you are looking for this information and what other roofing facts we can provide!

Have a great day!
