You know, it seems like a silly question to all the roofers who read our blog but one of the top 5 questions we get asked by the general public is “What is A Roofing Square?”. In this short video and blog post, we are going to let you know.
What does a Square mean in roofing?
A roofing square is 100 square feet on a roof.
Examples of How Many Squares Is The Roof On Your Home.
So I imagine if you have stumbed on this post, you are thinking about replacing the roof on your home and need to know if your roofing contractor is being honest about the size of your roof. If you are interested to find out for yourself how many squares are on your roof, I will put a YouTube video on how to measure your roof at the bottom of this post.
Ok, on the examples.
Let’s say that your roof is 4,000 square feet (please note this number will be higher than the living area of your home). If a roofing square is 100 square feet, this is just a simple division problem.
4,000 / 100 = 40
Your roof is 40 squares!
So some of you may be thinking, “Ok, I get that! I am not an idiot. How do I figure up the square feet on my roof?!”

To figure out the square footage of your roof, this will get you close…
- Measure the square footage of your house
- Multiple that number of your roofing slope factor

That will give you the square footage of your roof. But keep in mind, if you are ordering materials for a roof replacement, you also need to account for waste when getting the amount of roofing materials needed for the amount of roofing squares you have.
